About Matt
Matt is a British composer and sound designer known for his emotionally charged, texturally rich scores for film, television, and audio drama. With a background that bridges orchestral writing, electronic soundscapes, and detailed sound design, his work is defined by a strong narrative focus and a distinctive, atmospheric voice.
He is particularly known for his work on the acclaimed ITV dramas Grace and Endeavour, where his music plays a central role in shaping the tone, tension, and emotional undercurrent of each story. His scores for these series blend subtle thematic writing with detailed sonic worlds, supporting both character and place while allowing the drama to breathe.
Alongside his composing career, Matt is Music Director of the London Metropolitan Orchestra (LMO), collaborating closely with players, conductors, and production teams to bring film and television scores to life. A highly experienced conductor, he regularly leads recording sessions and performances, guiding large ensembles through complex, time-sensitive projects and ensuring that every detail on the page translates into a focused, emotionally resonant performance. With LMO he has worked on a wide variety of high-profile projects across film, TV, games, and records, overseeing and supporting everything from orchestral sessions to bespoke recording setups.
Matt is also the founder of Charts of London, a specialist music preparation and orchestration service that supports composers, production companies, and recording sessions with high-quality scores and parts. Through Charts of London he has provided music preparation and related services on numerous projects, helping to ensure that complex scores translate smoothly into the recording and performance environment.
Matt’s approach is rooted in storytelling: every cue is built to support character, pace, and mood, whether through intimate, minimal motifs or expansive, cinematic sound worlds. Equally at home writing for live players or crafting detailed electronic environments, he often blends the two to create scores that feel both contemporary and timeless.
Collaboration sits at the heart of his process. He enjoys working closely with directors, producers, and editors from early in development, helping to shape the sonic identity of a project and ensuring that music and sound deepen the emotional impact rather than simply accompanying it. His experience across composing, sound design, conducting, and post-production gives him a holistic understanding of how music interacts with dialogue, effects, and picture.
Alongside screen work, Matt writes concert and standalone pieces, exploring many of the same ideas that drive his media compositions: atmosphere, gradual transformation, and the tension between simple themes and complex textures. His music often features subtle rhythmic evolution, layered harmonies, and a keen attention to space and silence.
Whether scoring a dark psychological drama, a slow-burning thriller, or a reflective documentary, Matt brings a careful ear and a storyteller’s instinct to every project—always aiming to create music that serves the story, lingers in the imagination, and rewards repeated listening.
